In preparing a teaching on the three parts of the Torah that Jews around the world sing and study this time of year a teaching on how to better listen to the Earth comes to mind. Jews also study certain verses from the Talmud these weeks called "Sayings of the Fathers"(Pirke Avot) and here are three "items" mentioned that are said to have been created in the twilight of the first Sabbath.
"Ten things were created at twilight on the eve of the first Sabbath:
"Ten things were created at twilight on the eve of the first Sabbath:
· The mouth of the earth (Numbers 16:32);(prsha Korach)
· The mouth of the well (Numbers 21:16);(prsha Chukas)
· The mouth of the donkey (Numbers 22:28);(prsha Balak)"
Since they were created at the special beginning of the Sabbath they hold secrets as to how to understand and help bring in a world where Peace and kindness will have a greater "dominion" than the thirst for power and control of others.
Each of these "mouths" has a natural form but it's miraculous nature was because it performed at a function above it's normal status. So the earth always has the ability to open and swallow people but it did so in the Torah story at an ordained moment in time and space. Likewise rocks often are like a mouth to a spring or well of flowing water but the one that Miriam is said to have traveled with for the people in the wilderness, gave water whenever it was needed. Also all animals have mouths but the mouth of Balaam's donkey spoke with a human voice when needed to warn him of what he could not see. So each "mouth" was able to function at a higher level with a divine intervention.
It appears that with the eruption of this Hawaiian volcano synchronous with a special Jewish holiday/Lag B'Omer/May 3rd and in it's continuing with quite interesting developments, that the "mouth of the Earth" is speaking to us again.
This is in honor of my father who loved the Torah.
